PRODUCT DETAILS

1746-NO4V — SLC 500 4-Channel Bipolar Analog Voltage Output Module

The 1746-NO4V is a 4-channel analog voltage output module for the SLC 500 modular chassis, generating a bipolar -10 to +10V DC signal per channel for driving valve positioners, drive speed references, and other field devices accepting a standard voltage input. The module is factory calibrated and uses 16-bit two's complement binary data, with the option to power its analog circuitry from either the SLC backplane or an external 24V DC supply depending on the panel's power budget.

Bipolar Output Without External Loop Power Required

The ±10V bipolar range covers applications where a signal needs to represent both positive and negative quantities directly — bidirectional drive speed references, valve positioners with open/close direction, or any control loop where zero isn't necessarily the bottom of the operating range. Because the module is non-isolated and factory calibrated, no field calibration step is normally needed at commissioning; channels are ready to use once wired and configured in the controller program.

The switch-selectable power source (SW1) gives flexibility in panels with a tight backplane power budget: when an external 24V DC supply is connected and the switch set accordingly, the module draws only its 5V backplane current rather than pulling from the SLC chassis's 24V rail as well — useful when several analog modules in the same chassis would otherwise compete for limited 24V backplane capacity.

FAQ

Q: Can this module be removed from the chassis while powered?

No. The module does not support removal under power — doing so risks an electrical arc that can damage the module's circuitry. Always de-energize the chassis before removing or installing this module.

Q: Where in the chassis should this module be installed for best noise performance?

Install away from AC wiring, high-level DC circuits, and the system power supply where possible, and prefer a chassis position near the bottom of the enclosure for better ambient temperature stability — both factors reduce noise pickup on the analog signal.

Q: Does the module require an external power supply to operate?

Not necessarily. It can draw its analog circuit power from the SLC backplane by default, or from an external 24V DC supply (21.6–26.4V tolerance) if SW1 is set for external power — the choice depends on the panel's available backplane current budget.

Q: What's the maximum recommended wire size for field connections?

14 AWG is the maximum recommended wire size for this module's removable terminal block — using heavier gauge wire can be difficult to seat properly in the terminal block's clamping mechanism.
