PRODUCT DETAILS

VPL-B0631U-PJ12AA — Kinetix VP Low-Inertia Servo Motor, 230V, 0.48 kW

The VPL-B0631U-PJ12AA is a low-inertia brushless servo motor from the Kinetix VP series, designed for use with Kinetix 5500 and 5700 servo drives. It delivers 0.48 kW continuous power with a continuous stall torque of 1.15 Nm and a peak torque of 3.45 Nm — a 3:1 peak-to-continuous ratio that supports aggressive acceleration profiles in pick-and-place, packaging, and indexing applications. The motor operates from a 230V AC drive bus.

Low inertia is the design priority here. A low rotor inertia means the motor responds faster to torque commands and reaches target velocity in less time — which matters when cycle rate is the metric the machine is built around. The tradeoff is that low-inertia motors are more sensitive to reflected load inertia; if the connected load has significantly higher inertia than the rotor, servo tuning becomes harder and performance degrades. Keeping the load-to-rotor inertia ratio under 10:1 is the general rule of thumb, though well-tuned systems can exceed this.

Matching This Motor to Its Drive

The VPL-B0631U-PJ12AA is designed specifically for the Kinetix 5500 and 5700 drive families. Pairing is done in Studio 5000's Motion Analyzer or directly in the axis configuration dialog — selecting the motor catalog number loads the motor's torque-speed curve, inertia, and feedback parameters automatically. Manual entry of these values is error-prone and not recommended.

For the 230V bus voltage, the compatible Kinetix 5500 drives are the 2198-Hxxx-ERSx series. The drive's continuous current rating must exceed the motor's continuous stall current; the peak current rating must cover the motor's peak torque demand at the application's maximum acceleration rate. Motion Analyzer will flag mismatches during system sizing.

Mounting and Cooling

The motor mounts via four face-mount bolt holes on the front flange. Ensure the mounting surface is flat and the motor shaft is aligned with the driven load within 0.05 mm TIR (total indicated runout) — misalignment at this motor size generates bearing side loads that reduce bearing service life noticeably. A flexible coupling is still recommended even with careful alignment.

Cooling is self-ventilated (the rotor acts as a fan). At continuous rated output, the motor frame heats to approximately 60–70°C above ambient under normal conditions. This is within spec but means the motor housing should not be touched during or immediately after operation. For duty cycles that keep the motor at or near peak torque for extended periods, verify the thermal duty cycle against the motor's S1/S2/S3 ratings in the datasheet.

FAQ

Q: Does this motor require homing after each power cycle?

No. The multi-turn absolute encoder retains position through power cycles (within its multi-turn range). The drive reads absolute position at power-up, eliminating the need for a homing routine in most applications.

Q: Can this motor be used with a holding brake for vertical axis applications?

The "U" in the part number indicates no brake. For vertical axes, a brake version is required — the catalog number would have a "B" in place of "U." Running a vertical axis without a brake on an unbuffered power-off risks dropping the load if the drive loses power.

Q: What is the maximum cable length between the motor and drive?

Standard power and feedback cable pairs are rated up to 50 m for most Kinetix 5500 configurations. Beyond 50 m, signal integrity on the feedback cable can degrade. Consult the system wiring specifications for the specific cable part numbers and length limits.

Q: Can this motor be used outdoors or in wet environments?

The IP65 rating covers dust-tight and water jet protection, but the shaft seal (not included in the motor body itself) must be installed for full IP65 on the shaft end. Continuous submersion or outdoor exposure to standing water requires additional sealing beyond the standard motor build.

Q: What happens if the inertia ratio exceeds 10:1?

Higher inertia ratios make the servo loop harder to tune — the motor has to work harder to move a relatively large reflected inertia, which can cause overshoot, oscillation, or sluggish response. It's not a hard electrical limit, but performance and stability margins degrade. Gearing down the load (mechanical reduction) is the standard fix when inertia ratio is too high.
