PRODUCT DETAILS

1734-AENT — POINT I/O Single-Port EtherNet/IP Adapter

The 1734-AENT is a single-port EtherNet/IP adapter for the POINT I/O system, connecting a DIN-rail bank of distributed I/O modules to a Logix-based controller over the network. It supports up to 63 I/O modules and as many as 504 discrete I/O points per node, communicating at 10/100 Mbps with auto-negotiated half or full-duplex operation, and provides 1.0A of POINTBus current to power the connected modules.

A Single Port Into a Large I/O Footprint

The single Ethernet port distinguishes this adapter from dual-port variants in the same platform — it connects in star or linear topology only, without DLR ring participation. For applications where ring redundancy isn't required, this is a simpler, more economical choice that still scales to a substantial I/O count: 63 modules and 504 points per node is enough for most distributed I/O nodes without needing to split the system across multiple adapters.

The thumbwheel switches on the adapter face provide a quick, tool-free way to set the node address without needing a network configuration tool present at commissioning — useful for field replacement scenarios where getting the adapter back online quickly matters more than the convenience of software-based addressing. A specific compatibility note applies when replacing an adapter in an existing system: this model requires Series C POINT I/O modules specifically; earlier Series A or B modules aren't compatible with it.

FAQ

Q: Can this adapter participate in a Device Level Ring network?

No. With only one Ethernet port, this adapter supports star or linear topology only. DLR ring participation requires the dual-port variant in the same platform family.

Q: Can older Series A or B POINT I/O modules be used with this adapter?

No. This adapter specifically requires Series C POINT I/O modules. Earlier series modules are not compatible and won't function correctly if installed on a node using this adapter.

Q: What happens if the connected I/O modules draw more than the 1.0A POINTBus budget?

Exceeding the budget risks unreliable module operation. Sum the POINTBus current draw of all planned modules against the adapter's 1.0A capacity before finalizing the node, or insert an expansion power supply module partway through the bank to extend the available current.

Q: How is the IP address typically set during initial commissioning?

Via the front-panel thumbwheel switches for a quick, tool-free static assignment, or through BOOTP/DHCP tools if dynamic addressing fits the network's management approach better — both methods are supported on this adapter.
